Dear Parents and Athletes, 

Arrangements for Women's Eights Head of the River Race (WEHORR):

The Women’s Eights Head of the River Race is raced on the River Thames over 4 miles and 374 yards, or 6.8 kilometres, from the start at the University Pole in Chiswick to the finish at Putney Pier. The start time for this years race is: 11:30am. Crews are set off approximately every 10 seconds so if you look at the crew race number, you can work out what time the crews will be coming down the course. The best place to view the race is from the Hammersmith Bridge.

The Headington 1st VIII is going off 22nd

The 2nd VIII is starting 262nd

The 3rd VIII is starting 268th

The 4th VIII is starting 275th


The bus will depart at 7am at the latest. Please meet at the School gym at 645am. Please note that there are boarders and girls who may be sleeping. YOU MUST NOT MAKE ANY NOISE outside the boarding house. Transport is available back from Putney however, where possible, please can parents arrange transport back from the event. No girls may depart the event until the trailer is fully loaded.

Itinerary: Womens Head: Saturday the 16th March 2019

Please note that it is the girls responsibility that they follow the coaches instructions and the timings below. Please note that once the crews have boated they will have a long wait on the water before racing. The girls will therefore have to make sure that they do not over hydrate and have had a loo stop prior to racing, all girls will need to have cold weather kit available.

0645: Meet at School Gym

0700: Buses depart from School Gym.

0830: Arrive at Thames RC, Putney.

0900: Boats rigged and checked for race.

1000: Dressed and ready for pre-race chat at the trailer. You will then warm up and boat.

1015 Crews boat

1100: In marshalling area (make sure you have warm kit as you may have to wait at the start) - crews that are late for marshalling may be penalised or even disqualified.

1130: Approximate start time: it could be earlier so ensure that you row straight to your marshalling area.

Once you have completed your race please make sure that you report any breakages or other issues immediately to your coach.

1200 onwards: Off the water.

from 1230: De-Rig and load trailer (all girls who race during the day must de-rig and help load the trailer). No girl may depart before the trailer is fully loaded and ready to depart.

Kit and Food

Please ensure that you have:

- Water bottles with electrolyte replacement fluid.

- Food.

- A good breakfast before you depart (eg: Poridge, toast and a banana).
- Post Race: Make sure you have pasta for after your race, a banana / fruit, a cereal bar.

- Kit: You will need a change of kit for after your race. Make sure you have enough warm kit for when you are sitting around even if it means you bring a blanket down. It may be cold on Saturday, please come prepared.

-Wellington boots are essential for boating at Putney

Parking and Spectating:

Headington are boating from Thames Rowing Club on the Putney Embankment but there is very limited parking in the vicinity of the Putney Embankment.

Viewing is possible along the full length of the course but the best place to spectate is from Hammersmith Bridge.


There is no training on Sunday 17th March for J15 to Senior rowers
