Saturday the 15th of March saw the J14 and J15 squads make the journey to Kingston Head of the River, racing over 5200m. This event provides some great racing against tough competition in the build up to the key head races of the year. With School’s Head of the River Race approaching for the J15s, and the Scullery closing in for the J14s and J15s, this race gave an excellent chance to get some preparation in for each squad.
Division 1 saw the J15 coxed quad arrive bright and early to get the day started. They had an excellent race, battling the wind, to come away with a strong win by 35 seconds.
Division 2 followed with bigger boats, and blustery wind. The J15 8+ dealt with some tough conditions while marshalling, but came out with a really strong race, finishing in 4th. The two J14 Octos came next with their first race of the year, performing really well during a long race. The first Octo down finished 1st, overtaking several crews in a really strong race. The second Octo raced well, coming in at a respectable 10th place, with many of the crew having learnt to row in September!
Overall, a great day of racing for the J14 and J15 squads, boding well for an exciting couple of weeks of racing to end the winter season.
